Make sure you fill up your car on Thursday this week, as fuel prices increase by a penny from Friday October 1. Here, we look at some of other ways you can beat rising fuel costs… Remember back in March when Alistair Darling gave what turned out to be the last budget of the Labour government? There was meant to be a 3p rise in fuel duty back in April, but the then-chancellor agreed to stagger it to give motorists a bit of a break.

Fuel duty rose 1p in April this year, and is set to rise by another 1p at the start of October. There will be an additional 1p a litre hike in January.
