I have said before that I dont think electric cars are the way of the future and I have little interest in them. Well, most of them that is. When the fun factor is turned up to max, a battery-powered car can catch my attention.
The Venturi America caught my attention!
Not only is this on/off road buggy dead sexy to look at, but it also has the performance to back it up. The mid-mounted 220 kw motor produces the equivalent of over 300 horsepower. All that juice is sent to the rear wheels through a limited slip differential, ensuring that energy reaches the ground equally. This combination generates some pretty impressive performance numbers: The America is capable of a top speed of 112 miles per hour!
Weight is kept to a manageable 2970 pounds through the use of a carbon composite and aluminum sandwich, and carbon fiber body panels. The lithium ion polymer battery weighs in at close to 1,000 lbs, so the chassis is a comparative featherweight.
For those of us who live outside a downtown core, the downfall of many electric cars is their extremely limited range. The Venturi America has a range of close to 200 miles when driven at highway speeds.
Whether used for a SoCal commute or playing in the dirt on the weekend, the folks at Venturi seem to have found that happy medium between fun and function that has been missing from the electric car market. While it may not be the most practical body configuration for daily life in northern climes, the America shows that electric can be a viable alternative.
